Digital Chocolate's latest effort, 3D Mini Golf: Castles, is an arcadey attempt to bring the classic game of putt putt to a new audience, an audience where videogames and MP3 players dominate. Mini golf certainly still has a popular following, but it's not the big shot, action packed amusement that it once was. Well it probably never was action packed, but it still gave some enjoyment on those days when table tennis and badminton just didn't cut it.
So how did they go in making this somewhat boring game a hit? Digital Chocolate have managed to balance well the realistic side of mini golf, with good ball physics, as well as catering for a different side by keeping the games nice and quick. There are nine holes per course, and each course doesn't take any longer than 5 or so minutes to complete. It's fun stuff, and really rewarding sinking that hole in one. That being said, a couple of shots going astray will in some cases set you back too far against your competition, and make winning impossible. There are three different courses, and to unlock each one you will have to come first in the competition. Luckily there is a practise mode to get your skills up!
The graphics, like most 3D mobile games, are the standout point for the game. They look fantastic, and make 3D Mini Golf: Castles probably the best looking mobile phone game I've played. The characters and courses look really effective in full 3D form, and the animations are smooth and well done, just wait until you see the victory dances! Of course the game is presented in full 3D, you can fully rotate the camera around and check out the scenery.
The sound is also a standout, the themes are bright and lively, and provide some good atmosphere when teeing off.
In the end, 3D Mini Golf: Castles 3D is a quick, fun distraction, but not good for much else. The repetitive nature of the game means that you won't exactly be playing it for days on end, but all the same it's a great title to add to your collection if you want some brief, albeit VERY good looking fun.
