Pr��face de l'��diteur
Je poss��de un volume petit in-8��, intitul��: _Memnon, histoire orientale_, Londres (Paris), 1747. Ce volume, r��imprim�� sous le m��me titre, en 1748, contient quinze chapitres, qui font partie de _Zadig, ou la Destin��e, histoire orientale_, 1748, in-12. Zadig a de plus que Memnon trois chapitres, qui sont aujourd'hui les XII, XIII, et XVII. L'��dition encadr��e de I775 est la premi��re qui contienne le chapitre VII. Deux autres chapitres, les XIV et XV, et des additions au chapitre vi, parurent pour la premi��re fois dans les ��ditions de Kehl. Colini, secr��taire de Voltaire en 1753, raconte[1] que les additions faites alors �� Zadig, ?les calomnies et les m��chancet��s des courtisans, la fausse interpr��tation donn��e par ceux-ci �� des demi-vers trouv��s dans un buisson, la disgrace du h��ros, sont autant d'all��gories dont l'explication se pr��sente naturellement.? Cependant, d��s l'��dition de 1747, le chapitre iv contient les demi-vers; les chapitres XIV et XV n'ont ��t��, comme je l'ai dit, ajout��s qu'en 1785; les chapitres XII, XIII et XVII sont, comme on l'a vu, de 1748. Ce serait donc au chapitre VII que se borneraient les additions faites en 1753; et ce chapitre n'a ��t�� publi�� qu'en 1775.

A l'occasion de Zadig, Longchamp raconte que Voltaire d��sirant faire imprimer ce roman pour son compte, mais craignant que les imprimeurs n'en tirassent des exemplaires au-del�� du nombre convenu, et que le livre ne f?t r��pandu dans le public avant que l'auteur l'e?t offert �� ses amis, eut recours au moyen suivant, pour parer aux inconv��nients qu'il redoutait. Il fit venir l'imprimeur Prault, et lui demanda quel serait le prix d'une ��dition tir��e �� mille exemplaires. Le prix parut trop ��lev�� �� Voltaire; mais, d��s le lendemain, Prault vint de lui-m��me proposer une diminution d'un tiers dans le prix, et _Voltaire lui donna la premi��re moiti�� du roman de Zadig, qui ��tait ��crit sur des cahiers d��tach��s, dont le dernier se terminait avec la fin d'un chapitre_, annon?ant que pendant que cette partie serait sous presse, il reverrait l'autre. Voltaire fit avertir Machuel, libraire de Rouen , momentan��ment �� Paris, et apr��s les conventions sur le prix, lui remit la fin de l'ouvrage, en indiquant �� quelle page' il devait commencer.
