Theodor Mommsen Roemische Geschichte Achtes Buch Laender und
Leute von Caesar bis Diocletian Der Wunsch, dass die 'Roemische
Geschichte' fortgesetzt werden moege, ist mir oefter geaeussert worden,
und er trifft mit meinem eigenen zusammen, so schwer es auch ist,
nach dreissig Jahren den Faden da wieder aufzunehmen, wo ich ihn
fallen lassen musste. Wenn er nicht unmittelbar anknuepft, so ist daran
wenig gelegen; ein Fragment wuerde der vierte Band ohne den fuenften
ebenso sein, wie es der fuenfte jetzt ist ohne den vierten. Ueberdies
meine ich, dass die beiden zwischen diesem und den frueheren
fehlenden Buecher fuer das gebildete Publikum, dessen Verstaendnis
des roemischen Altertums zu foerdern diese Geschichte bestimmt ist,
eher durch andere Werke vertreten werden koennen als das vorliegende.
Der Kampf der Republikaner gegen die durch Caesar errichtete
Monarchie und deren definitive Feststellung, welche in dem Sechsten
Buch erzaehlt werden sollen, sind so gut aus dem Altertum ueberliefert,
dass jede Darstellung wesentlich auf eine Nacherzaehlung hinauslaeuft.
Das monarchische Regiment in seiner Eigenart und die Fluktuationen
der Monarchie sowie die durch die Persoenlichkeit der einzelnen
Herrscher bedingten allgemeinen Regierungsverhaeltnisse, denen das
Siebente Buch bestimmt ist, sind wenigstens oftmals zum Gegenstand
der Darstellung gemacht worden. Was hier gegeben wird, die
Geschichte der einzelnen Landesteile von Caesar bis auf Diocletian,
liegt, wenn ich nicht irre, dem Publikum, an das dieses Werk sich
wendet, in zugaenglicher Zusammenfassung nirgends vor, und dass
dies nicht der Fall ist, scheint mir die Ursache zu sein, weshalb
dasselbe die roemische Kaiserzeit haeufig unrichtig und unbillig
beurteilt. Freilich kann diese meines Erachtens fuer das richtige
Verstaendnis der Geschichte der roemischen Kaiserzeit vorbedingende

Trennung dieser Spezialgeschichten von der allgemeinen des Reiches
fuer manche Abschnitte, insbesondere fuer die Epoche von Gallienus
bis auf Diocletian, wieder nicht vollstaendig durchgefuehrt werden und
hat hier die noch ausstehende allgemeine Darstellung ergaenzend
einzutreten. Wenn ueberhaupt ein Geschichtswerk in den meisten
Faellen nur mit und durch die Landkarte anschaulich wird, so gilt dies
von dieser Darstellung des Reiches der drei Erdteile nach seinen
