some (ancient) Greek quotations. The character set used for those
quotations is a modern Greek character set. Therefore, aspirations are
not marked in Greek words, nor is there any differentiation between the
different accents of ancient Greek and the subscript iotas are missing as

beherrschte die von ihm restaurierte Oligarchie unbeschraenkt den
roemischen Staat; allein wie sie durch Gewalt gegruendet war, bedurfte
sie auch ferner der Gewalt, um sich gegen ihre zahlreichen heimlichen
und offenen Gegner zu behaupten. Was ihr entgegenstand, war nicht
etwa eine einfache Partei mit klar ausgesprochenen Zwecken und unter
bestimmt anerkannten Fuehrern, sondern eine Masse der
mannigfaltigsten Elemente, die wohl im allgemeinen unter dem Namen
der Popularpartei sich zusammenfassten, aber doch in der Tat aus den
verschiedenartigsten Gruenden und in der verschiedenartigsten Absicht
gegen die Sullanische Ordnung des Gemeinwesens Opposition machten.
Da waren die Maenner des positiven Rechts, die Politik weder machten
noch verstanden, denen aber Sullas willkuerliches Schalten mit dem
Leben und Eigentum der Buerger ein Greuel war. Noch bei Lebzeiten
Sullas, waehrend jede andere Opposition schwieg, lehnten die strengen
Juristen gegen den Regenten sich auf: es wurden zum Beispiel die
Cornelischen Gesetze, welche verschiedenen italischen
Buergerschaften das roemische Buergerrecht aberkannten, in

gerichtlichen Entscheidungen als nichtig behandelt, ebenso das
Buergerrecht von den Gerichten erachtet als nicht aufgehoben durch die
Kriegsgefangenschaft und den Verkauf in die Sklaverei waehrend der
Revolution. Da waren ferner die Ueberreste der alten liberalen
Senatsminoritaet, welche in frueheren Zeiten auf eine Transaktion mit
der Reformpartei und mit den Italikern hingearbeitet hatte und jetzt in
aehnlicher Weise geneigt
